If anyone cares I eventually got it to work by dropping back to the desktop, starting Steam there and reinstalling. Who knew?

Does it have anything to do with surface tension of the mercury?

I’d be one of them but damned if I can get it working on the steam deck. There’s a process around with over 70 steps to follow, but so far I haven’t had the time or inclination to do so. It’s the only real failure the deck has had for me.

Although the breathless tone at the start is a bit annoying, it develops into a well written and researched piece. I suspect from your comment you didn’t read the article - it’s worth the time.
