If you are doing something illegal then you should definitely bring a new device. If you are not doing something illegal then you should just bring your normal device and keep it locked/off when entering.

They can force biometrics but not pin, but they will only do that if you’re already in super deep trouble for breaking the law. Just be normal and you’ll have no issues.

This is all extremely unlikely unless you are a known enemy of the state or are bringing in illegal goods.

In customs they simply ask you why you’re visiting, where you came from, if you’re bringing any illegal goods, then let you pass through. If you’re flying in, there’s usually a huge line of people at the airport and you only end up talking to the customs agent for 10 to 30 seconds.

If you have a very suspicious story that doesn’t check out or you’re trying to bring in illegal goods to the country or you know that you are doing something nefarious then you should be concerned that they might pull you into a back room. I think all of these concerns are very overblown for the average person though.

When I was reading about whether to bring my phone to China, everyone online had similar recommendations about bringing a new device and it ended up being completely unnecessary. They don’t check anyone’s phone and they asked no questions other than reason for visiting. When I told my co-workers about my concerns they all thought it was quite comical because they’ve traveled more than anyone and see this as extreme paranoia.

Of course they could take your phone and put you in jail for any reason they want if they really wanted to, the most important thing is to not give them a reason to. They will only get your phone if you give them a reason in the first place.

Just keep your phone locked/off when you go through the border so it requires a pin.

It mostly bothers me when I just order 1 entree and a water. At one place that might cost $10, and at another place it might cost $30, and all the wait staff did was carry a plate from the kitchen to me in both cases.

It doesn’t seem fair that the wait staff at the more expensive place gets tipped more than the less expensive place just because of an arbitrary custom.

The extra cost of the expensive meal is mostly due to ingredients, the cooking process, the location, and maaay slightly more complicated table setting.

  • This is like when I was 11 and my family went hiking up a mountain in Yellowstone. My young cousin and I thought my brother was ahead of us on the trail so we hurried up trying to catch up to him. We were passing many hikers on a busy trail and being safe.

An hour later my brother comes running up behind us saying everyone is looking for us! Apparently the park rangers had been mobilized to search for us, the missing children, and when we got down the mountain an hour or more later our families were down there in tears fearing we had fallen off the mountain or something.

Point being, it’s totally possible for everyone to think you’re lost and in danger when you are fine and know exactly where you are.

  • My understanding was that it was a real and legitimate trading platform had it not been for trading using customer deposits.

I don’t know what their business’ profit margin was, but I suspect that the amount of money they were making legitimately, such as from trading fees and margin interest, seemed like peanuts compared to their total customer deposits and how quickly the value was increasing as the price of crypto increased.

During the run up, it was almost impossible to lose money investing in crypto, everyone doing it thought they were a trading genius, so it was pretty tempting. I’m sure SBF and others there had been doing it and thought they could be billionaires if only they had the seed money. I think it started slowly at first, borrowing customer money to invest, try to make a good return, and the customer never knows.

If crypto had gone up forever, this plan may have worked. As crypto started going down, they had to invest more and more to try to earn back losses. They had to increase the credit limit of Alameda research multiple times before maxing it out.

I picture that like a gambling addict betting their house in order to win everything back. If they keep doubling their bet, eventually they’ll win and be in the green again, right?!

This meme format is used to express disapproval of the action being described, such as destroying mental health. The image in the comment being downvoted comes across as transphobic, despite the disclaimer at the bottom.
