You are not a regular user. My parents are regular users and they have been using Linux for years. They don’t know though. That’s a regular user.

I use Sia for this. It is essentially what you describe, but with a monetary system.

I rent out some of my storage, and use the Siacoin earned to buy storage for backups.

I use an Allpower power station, that has build in UPS.

Mostly Ubuntu, but sometimes Debian.

I administrate a PeerTube instance (peertube.wtf) and everything is just much more complicated compared to a Lemmy instance.

One reason I don’t “auto-federate” is because there’s a ton of pirated and questionable content. So much content is in a foreign language and so many instances are inactive and therefore filled with spam.

That’s why I add instances manually to federate with. This way, the quality of the content is also much higher.

You can pull from any provider you want, with Leaflet. Including OSM. But! OSM does not have the resources to provide tiles for everyone. https://operations.osmfoundation.org/policies/tiles/

Isn’t vector tiles generated locally? A raster tile needs to be generated every time it changes.

Leaflet is just the frontend. You need the actual tiles as well. You can either generate your own tiles or use something like mapbox, who generate the tiles for you and keep them updated.
