Okayyyy… thats not great. I just read one of the threads and thats scary.
The person(s?) maintaining this seems to be VERY BAD at communicating. They did fix the auto start problem but did not at all discuss this from what I see. Thats not great.
It works very well and there is no speed difference at all. Of course you wont ever get anything worth in life without either putting in the work or paying either with money or your privacy.

Hi there and congrats on giving the idea of migrating towards digital freedom a go.
I personally havent used macs ever but am on ios still for my phone and was on windows before with outlook, excel and word.
What I did was the following:
I run a plex server that organizes my music library and plays my music on all devices. Some things like sonos still have some issues with flac files but otherwise, playlists and albums are no problem. I dont know how strictly you need everythin on device because apple doesnt let you do that on linux without hacking itunes to run on wine. I stream music from my server and it is always reliable as long as I have minimal connection. There is a download option but I havent tested it. Movies play with no issue.
I fully transitioned to libreoffice on devices and use collabora office with my nextcloud instance when I want to cooperate over cloud services. Outlook has been replaced by thunderbird, events go through nextcloud, synced over all devices.
Also nextcloud. I sync all my photos between computers and my iphone. Nextcloud is work to set up but it is imho the most integrated solution which gives you a pretty comfortable experience. You can host it yourself or pay someone to host it for you which of course would mean a lot of trust that is needed.
For the sake of my sanity, my private stuff stays on my home network and the only way in is a vpn which I have automated on my laptop and a linux phone that I‘m working on. Ios afaik needs manual activation but once its synced, you‘re good. That takes the biggest threat away from personal cloud hosting imo. Just secure your home network and there should be no issues.

P.S.: I would suggest you first build the infrastructure. An old quad core with 8 gb ram, gigabit wired network and two good nas disks in raid 1 with an encrypted off site backup gives you double redundancy.

This. I‘m hosting a couple matrix servers and have many friends who have a ton of issues. It really depends on the admin and how tech savvy everyone involved is. If you cant be arsed to understand how key sharing works and check out which is the best client for you, matrix might bot be the best choice. I love it, personally but I suggest it rarely since tech illiterate users tend to get really upset about a free product not matching their insane standards.
I‘ve been their webhosting for 10 years and besides some minor errors (website didnt work for 30 mins here and there) I‘m very happy.
I informed myself about their cloud programme with help of a sales rep and although it is quite expensive compared to hetzner, it seems very usable.
I dont think you need to worry about them for a vps. Its not like they would rob you or your data will be lost. They might turn out to be slightly better or worse than hetzner long term which would both be fine in my book.

Thats the smaller problem. The government can connect you easily for a nice ethnic cleansing if it comes to it.
The disturbing part about this is that people are able to trick themselves and others into believing this.
Even if (and thats a big if) google does not outright sell your personal data, their business is to use it to influence people in ways that have scientifically proven to not work in their self interest. This data is bei g collected illegally in part and „legally“ in others.
The issue here is giving third parties the tools to unnaturally mass influence the world towards interests that are contrary to the actual needs of the world (climate catastrophe comes to mind).
Google is as bad as the others but in different ways. I‘m dont have the time to research for you rn but just check monopoly cases against google. I hope they get broken up.
The problem for me is the shipping. It was more than 100$ for the dc roma laptop 2. maybe the tablet is less.
In any case, I‘m definitely going for risc-v as a hobby dev and admin.

I agree that the playerbase isnt huge. I do think a small dedicated playerbase is pretty nice though.
And you have no telemetry, no chat restrictions and its free.
The redstone is a large feat indeed. I started working on that but had to stop due to time constraints. Its still in my head though.

Github alternatives are very early in their existence. Things like gitlab, forgejo and such are very limiting if you want to promote a new project.
Although you are technically right, your premise is much too strict. If you cant be asked to help people do the right thing, I dont think you‘re in the right place discussing foss things.
I can solely repeat what I said earlier: be the change you want to see. Help people do the right thing and stop bitching about all the things that unpaid volunteers are doing wrong in your opinion.
I dont know about caddy but nginx proxy manager does this very well. Also, if running in docker, you can expose the port that runs ssh for forgejo und a different port than the host machine‘s (eg 2222). In that case you just put the remote in with the port and call it a day.
