In household wiring polarity does matter, especially if you are assembling plugs. Only one of the three wires is carrying live current (hot), the other two are the neutral return path, and ground which is for safety. If you accidentally switch polarity, you can cross hot to neutral and cause a short circuit.

  • The “intuitiveness” of imperial measurements is that they’re sorta human-scaled, at least for human-sized measurements. An inch is about the same length as the tip of my thumb, a foot is about as big as my foot, a yard is a single pace if I stretch a bit, etc. which makes it easier for a person to picture it.

Once you get out of that scale it really starts to break down though.

  • The really neat thing about those changes to the meter is that it didn’t really change how long a meter was (-ish), it changed the precision of that definition, as well as the ability to reproduce an exact meter, reducing the need for a specific piece of material to define the meter (which changes length based on environment). Now, an exact standard meter can be reproduced independently in any lab with the proper equipment.

  • Yes, your total energy consumption drops, but your electricity consumption rises as a result. Electrification of stuff that relied on burning fossil fuels means that electricity consumption goes up even while total energy consumption stays the same or drops. I’m not necessarily saying that nuclear is the solution, but it’s a solution that can at least buy us a few decades for renewables and energy storage to catch up to demand.

  • Dude… you’re the one that said PCIE isn’t plug and play, which is incorrect. Plug and play simply means not having to manually assign IRQ/DMA/etc before using the peripheral, instead being handled automatically by the system/OS, as well as having peripherals identify themselves allowing the OS to automatically assign drivers. PCIE is fully plug-and-play compatible via ACPI, and hot swapping is supported by the protocol, if the peripheral also supports it.

Criminalizing drugs has only ever been harmful. The people using these drugs aren’t criminals, they’re victims. They need treatment, not jail. What fucking monster thinks that someone who has fallen to an incredibly addictive substance needs incarceration, not treatment? You think someone who got caught with a needle in their arms deserves the same treatment as a murderer? People have lifetime sentences for possession of heroin and rapists get a couple years.
