  • Thanks, yeah I will consider the options. Would be nice to have it in one as the raspberry pi is aging (it’s an original model B) and the gateway should be plenty powerful enough to run it, plus it would rule out the pi-hole to router connection as a possible reason for the unstable network.

  • Well I was hoping to spend the same amount and get one that does everything I wanted 😆. I’m happy with separating things if it make sense, but I have two power points and already have too many devices in that spot (fiber connection modem + ISP router + two raspberry pi’s (one for pi-hole, one for home assistant) + a switch + RF sensor for detecting doorbell + more I’m probably forgetting). Some of these are powered from USB ports on other ones. Being able to replace the ISP router with a gateway that’s also a switch that also handles the pi-hole would mean three of those devices become one, and it seems feasible!

  • Thanks for all the info and the detailed response!

But it sounds like you only need it to be a wired router, which is good.

    Correct, don’t need wifi.

PoE ports as a requirement is what narrows your options considerably I think

I’m happy with doing this through a separate switch, but I’m happier if I can have less things to plug in. It’s not a must have though.

Mikrotik has a lot of routers with PoE out. Their newest model in the RB5009 series can do either passive or 802.3af/at PoE out. Many of their older routers have passive PoE only. Make sure you know what your cameras need.

I don’t have cameras yet, but I’m considering some Reolink ones. Happy to take suggestions. Am I likely to find a lot of difference in the PoE type or are most things compatible with each other?

  • One of the things I use pi-hole for is to set customer DNS entries so anyone on the network will be redirected directly to the self hosted services when the type in the appropriate domain name. So it’s not just about the filtering (which I also want), but also the (network wide) custom DNS entries.

I’m also happy with simple. I’m not overly against keeping the pi-hole and gateway separate but was just wanting to know if combining them would be an option (which is sounds like it is, but not super easy).

It’s a little bit more complicated than I made out. For one, the network is super unstable and restarting the ISP router seems to fix it. I want to replace the router to test the theory that it’s the problem.

Secondly, this is a bring your own router to the ISP situation, but the router came from another ISP, but they are all the same ISP in the end because one company owns a whole bunch of ISPs and sends the same router to all the customers of all the child companies. Long story short, it’s the router they would have issued to me, but they didn’t, because a different subsidiary sent it to me before I changed ISPs to take advantage of a special because I live in a country where the lines are open and anyone can start an ISP using the existing lines but if you get big enough to be competition then the big company will buy you out and pretend it’s still a separate company. But if it doesn’t work well then it’s up to me to solve unless I am willing to pay the ~$10USD for them to send me the ISP router that is supported by them but it will be the same cheap router as I already have. Ok that’s not a very short story but that’s why it was easier to just call it an ISP router 😆

  • Oh speeds are great! Hundreds of Mbps. Depends on what you’re after. Not sure if they go into the Gbps, but I feel like I remember some locations do. My internet is only 300Mbps so can’t test higher. VPN speeds from a random local server are normally about 280Mbps. Not sure if that would be higher if my internet was faster.

I haven’t had any connection drops, and you can choose the location. Their guides also explain which locations work for streaming services if you want to check out the catalog from other countries. And they have specific servers that have P2P enabled if you want to use bittorrent.

I haven’t used Proton Drive for photos. It’s worth noting Proton Drive is a relatively new offering. The lack of Linux client is also a show stopper for me, as I don’t have a Windows computer to run it on. I’m keen to use it though when they get a client going.

The proton mail mobile app is fine, I use it and don’t have complaints. But I don’t like that I can’t use a different app if I want to 😆. It also doesn’t let you add other third party accounts into the app with IMAP so I have two apps while I transition.

  • I’ve used it, but haven’t used others so can’t compare!

What did you want to know?

I’ve recently signed up for Proton Unlimited, and have been playing with things. If you’re interested in the drive space, note there’s no Linux sync client (it’s Lemmy so I feel obligated to let you know), only the web client. There’s a windows client though.

The VPN is pretty easy. Log in, quick connect. Or manually select a server.

Needing bridge software for IMAP and having to use their email app on mobile is a bit annoying but it’s good enough that it’s fine.

I’ve found their help guides pretty good.

  • I just had the one trip, about a week in Jakarta (including a friend’s wedding), some time in Yogyakarta and Borobudur, and then were met up with the married couple and spent some time in Bali (my least favourite place, super touristy).

We didn’t have quite the offers you got!

Jakarta is crazy. We spent 3 hours in traffic to drive 28km one day. We saw a big apartment building and one next to it on a lean and gutted. Apparently they built one, it was on a lean, so they built it again next door, stripping the first on for materials.

Went up the big tower/monument thing, there is city as far as the eye can see. In fact, flying over Indonesia there aren’t really any large open spaces. Even farm land has buildings around the edge of each field.

I also drank a locally made rice based alcohol drink that if I knew about the risks I probably wouldn’t have drunk it.

  • Well hey, lucky us, we’re about to find out if I’m a liar! I just spent 30+ mins digging through photos. Is this a civet?

    photo of civet in cage

It’s not geotagged, it was taken with an average 10 years ago digital camera, but based on the photos taken at the same time, it’s in the general area of Borobudur, but not actually at that temple. My best guess is near Prambanan. Possibly we stopped somewhere on the taxi ride from one to the other.

I don’t think we went to Bandung, or at least I don’t remember stopping there. My memory is fuzzy but I think we drove from Jakarta to Yogyakarta so must have at least passed nearby. The place wasn’t an actual farm though, just a place serving the coffee with an example civet outside.
