That wasn’t on purpose, that’s literally all that was available on the 80s. When I picked my first set, there were only 3 options…those, the black framed nerd glasses with the white band in the middle at a time when Revenge Of The Nerds was a recent movie, or the giant rose colored plastic framed women’s glasses. I didn’t want to looked like a serial killer, but it was better than the alternatives.

I cannot confirm or deny whether your father was a serial killer, all I can say is that he probably just didn’t want to look like a nerd or Elton John.

Maybe he just knew he could never be as fabulous as Elton John so he didn’t even try

That was different times, you wouldn’t understand. It was simply the craze of the moment, you were a nobody if you didn’t do it.

I was just looking at a photo of the time yesterday. In it were around 15 people. Of those 15:

      • ≈8 were wearing prescription aviators
      • ≈4 were wearing aviator sunglasses
      • ≈3 weren’t wearing any glasses
      • 0 were wearing a different style of glasses

Side note: the person who showed me the photo was the only one in it still alive. He was ≈35 when it was taken. Probably the youngest by far of the group.

There were the grandma ones with the accented tips. But that was strictly grandmas. So yea. Not many options.

And then the 90s hit with those round framed tinted glasses and everyone went wild for them

Seriously, the glasses options were rough. My mom had the big plastic ones and my dad had some similar to these. I got my first pair in '91 and they had marginally better choices for kids, but not much. It was hard out there for a long time.

There were definitely a lot of kids ones in the early 90s that were basically the glasses in the OP but in an assortment of colors. My first pair was a purple and white speckled version of the 80s “serial killer” glasses.

If you were to tell me you suspected Gwyneth Paltrow of being a serial killer, I wouldn’t automatically say you were wrong…
